Strength Unseen

Day 6 of Write31Days:

Strength Unseen

This is probably one of the most famous quotes about getting through tough times. There is a deep truth in its simplicity. Often, when we are faced with hardships, we can get a little hyperbolic. We envision the end of days in our latest obstacle. However, the truth is that most of the time, the challenges in life aren’t likely to literally kill us. They may be painful, even excruciating, but unless it is a true physical challenge that could be terminal, we’ll most likely survive.

Though we will survive, we will be forever altered by the experience. It is within you to allow the struggle and eventual victory, no matter how ugly it may be, to strengthen you. But be careful not to fall into the trap of self-protectionism after such a struggle. That isn’t true strength, it is a barrier created by the fear of having to fight again. This happens all the time after an awful breakup when you declare you will never let another stomp all over your heart again. Or after a betrayal, when you decide it’s best never to be so open again that you’re vulnerable.

True strength comes from knowing that being vulnerable is the greatest gift to give yourself. As C.S. Lewis said, “To love is to be vulnerable.” To love a person who may break your heart and leave. Or to love a project that could fail spectacularly. Maybe even to love yourself despite your many flaws. These are the things that grow our greatness and shouldn’t be shied away from because the pain they could cause. They should be embraced for the power and strength you will generate.

What does this quote mean for you? What struggles have made you stronger in your life?

  1. My mother and I have a little saying about ourselves: “We may forgive but we will never forget”. It coincides with this quote a bit. The rough times we go through will always shape who we are and we are changed by them, for better or worse. We can move past the difficult and hard parts of our lives, but we carry them with us. If a similar situation comes up again we have the arsenal and know how to deal with the situation, hence making us stronger, or smarter or more resilient.

Very true, Meaghan! It’s all about learning from the past and not falling in to the same traps again. But recognizing them for what they are and making better decisions in future.

  2. I agree that we should not shy away from life just because we’ve been hurt in the past. Any time you can learn *something* from an experience gives it value (even it was unpleasant).

Exactly. Life will teach you a lot.. if you let it. 🙂
