My kind of Misfits

Day 3 of Write31Days:

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently – they’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do. – Steve Jobs

My kind of misfits

One of my favorite songs right now is Renegades by X Ambassadors. I’m sure you’ve heard it – it’s all over the radio now, soon to be played to death. But until then, I love to listen to it and get all jazzed up! The lyrics are fun and beat keeps me moving. I’m sure many people resonate with the lines:

All hail the underdogs
All hail the new kids
All hail the outlaws

I bet you already guessed I was quite the nerd in school. 😉 In my high school we had tables in the cafeteria for the nerds, jocks, stoners, cool kids and some “floaters” who could sit kind of wherever they wanted. But if you were a real geek you’d eat your lunch in the classroom. There you could get ahead on homework. Or play some Dungeons and Dragons or just sit quietly on your own, without having to worry about the judgment of others.

These are my people. The ones who see the world differently and refuse to conform. The ones who go to Renaissance fairs – fully dressed up! They proudly declare themselves Trekkies and go to Comic Con whenever possible. You can make fun of them all you like, but they know that any words you throw out are empty. Because they know how to live authentically, true to themselves.

I have to admit, I might have fallen prey to hiding parts of myself to appease others and their views. But I’m not playing that game anymore. I’m letting my freak flag fly high and proudly claim myself a misfit!

Your turn – have you been hiding a part of yourself? How can you live more authentically?

  1. I like that song! It’s got a good sound to it.

For me when it comes to being true to myself, I’ve learned that there are some battles worth fighting and some that aren’t – and a lot depends on my energy level at the moment. I’m not the type to be argumentative. Some people I run into are not going to care what I think/stand for and those people don’t matter to me. I won’t engage with people that won’t care. Waste of time.
However, I will try to be most true to myself around people who do care. Sometimes that’s hard because we want those people to like us. I do occasionally stay silent instead of speaking up. It feels wrong later, so I’m trying to do better about sharing my true self.

Very good points Erika! It’s all about picking your battles. There are times I will defend myself – I Love Nickelback, no matter what you all think! – and other times, I’ll just be quiet and walk away (as when everyone is talking about football games… I just wander off.) 😛
