Day 28 of Write31Days:
When I first moved to London at 24 years old, I didn’t have a clue. About life outside of school, or anything about England but what I’d read and saw on tv. And we all know that Bridget Jones and Mr. Bean are definitely accurate descriptions of Jolly Ol’ England! But I was determined to live and work in London and so I found a job at a university there and stayed for as long as my visa allowed. This was also around the time that Harry Potter was becoming HUGE. I have to confess now – it took me a while to appreciate Harry Potter and I struggled to get through the first book. But after that I was hooked.
At this point I doubt that there is a person alive who doesn’t know J.K. Rowling’s long hard journey to fame and fortune. However, I didn’t really get the sense of it until I watched the Lifetime movie, “Magic Beyond Words: The J.K. Rowling Story”. Normally, I’m not a big Lifetime viewer but I saw this in my Netflix suggestions and thought it looked pretty interesting. Boy, am I glad I watched it! (BTW, I would highly recommend it to any Rowling fans, if you haven’t seen it yet.)
The film did an excellent job of showing her struggles without a pitying slant or overzealous underdog tint to it. She was just a woman, a mother, trying to achieve her dream and care for her child. And she wasn’t taking ‘No’ for an answer. It was almost painful watching as she went from one publishing house to another trying to get noticed. All that time you’re thinking, “well, that editor will kick himself for rejecting her 6 months from now!”
After watching this movie, you feel you understand J.K. a little more. You see her passion that was burning so bright in her that she just couldn’t stop moving towards her dreams. I wish that kind of passion on everyone I know. That’s the kind of passion I have lost a little of in myself, from the time I moved to England those 10 years ago. An eager fresh-faced girl, just out of school, but ready to tackle the world! That’s the girl I never want to let go of. So I’m making a pledge to bring the passion and determination back into my life!
Over to you – what would be possible for you if you had the nerve?
